  • The label text.
  • Any instructions on how you like it to look. This page has options for borders, leathers, other materials and foils. Standard gold and black leather work for most labels.
  • The label width and height (if you want, the height can determine itself by how many lines of text there are, font size, etc.)

I'll email you back an estimate and black and white design for review and approval. Payment by Paypal, Venmo or other methods

Label Sizes and Pricing: Labels start at start at $8 for up to 4 square inches (width x height) on smooth black skiver leather. Here are some sizes under 4 square inches:

A - 1 ¾" X 1 ¼"
B - 2" X 1 ½"
C - 2" X 2"
D - 2 ½" X 1½
E - 3" X 1 ⅜"
F - 1" x 4"
G - 2¾" X 1⅜"

Choose one or give me your exact size. Specify height and width. Larger sizes cost more as do other options on this page including color leathers or genuine gold foil.

Additional charges may apply for needed design work. Often I can make two very small labels together (under 3 square inches or so in total) and charge for one.

Setup Fees: There is a setup fee for each order: $5 for orders of up to three labels with standard designs; $10 for orders of up to 8 labels.

Discounts: I can discount for multiple labels on a case-by-case basis but I generally cannot discount orders from Etsy or other online platforms. You must email me -- I cannot discuss via online messaging.

Attaching: The labels can be attached with white PVA glue, permanent glue stick, or wheat paste—see instructions (pdf).

Postage is billed at cost - normally 2-3 labels are under 1 ounce which is $.78 within the U.S. and $1.70 to most other countries.

Borders/Fonts

Below are some available borders and fonts. The bottom specialty designs may require an additional setup fee. You can also create your own designs -- see the design page.

Foil colors

High quality metallic hot stamping foil with gold/silver finish. U.S.-made. The standard gold will be used by default unless you tell me otherwise.

Genuine Gold Foil

Amazing, brilliant finish -- just what you'd expect. Never tarnishes. The 23 karat is light gold; the 22 karat is darker, antique gold. Prices are 75 percent more than standard foil (an $8 standard label becomes $14 in real gold). Requires fonts 12 points or larger; other design restrictions apply. Email me

Standard Leather Options

All leathers are vegetable tanned, specially made for bookbinding. Samples on request.
Thickness described below is the number of sheets of standard 20-pound copier paper sheets pressed together.

Smooth and very flexible - thickness is approx. 4 sheets of copier paper. $8 for up to 4 square inches ($2 per square inch for larger sizes)

Oxblood burgundy - very thin: thickness is approx. 2 sheets of copier paper. Same price as black.

Crimson skiver

Crimson is maroon - $9 for 4 sq. in ($2.25 per square inch for larger sizes). Thickness is approx. 5 sheets of copier paper.

Red skiver

$9 for 4 sq in ($2.25 per square inch for larger sizes). Thickness is approx. 3 sheets of copier paper.

A strong, flexible paper coated to simulate leather. $8 for the first label (up to 4 sq in); $5 for each additional with same size and design (text can change). Can be used to create full spines for rebacking books at a reasonable cost, as shown below. Stiff enough to not require additional lining.

A variety of colors are available in leather grain and smooth surfaces. According to the manufacturer: Skivertex has a latex saturated base for excellent tear and internal strength. The top coat is a durable aqueous acrylic coating with an embossed finish.
